Comparison/Contrast Essay

Sukabumi Regency or more known as Jampang is a regency in West Java Province, Indonesia. Jampang has population over two million according to 2014 Census (Wikipedia). The administrative capital of Jampang is the famous Pelabuhan Ratu and its area spread surrounded Sukabumi city. That is why some of Jampang area lies near surface of the ocean. Due to the fact, it makes Jampang have several famous beaches at the edge of its beautiful coast. The two most famous ones are: Pelabuhan Ratu and Keusik Urug. Both beaches bring their own unique characteristics. Although Pelabuhan Ratu is more famous than Keusik Urug, there are several things that many tourists should know about both beaches. The stereotype of foreign people might assume that beaches are similar from one to another. They gives natural view of the edge of the land. That is half true, because despite similarities of natural view, the South and the East beaches do have dissimilarities.

The first difference of both beaches that tourists should aware is they have opposite kind of waves. Keusik Urug’s waves are stronger rather than Pelabuhan Ratu. Having calmer waves, helps Pelabuhan Ratu being more famous rather than Keusik Urug. The sphere in Pelabuhan Ratu beach is save both for children, adults or even old tourists for having fun in the surface of the coast. Calmer waves make most of the Pelabuhan Ratu tourists feeling save for spending their time in the ocean. But in Keusik Urug, there is always strong waves coming. Even when the waves is not as strong as usual, they still not safe for tourists.  That is why Keusik Urug is less popular among foreign tourists. They do not want to risk their safety only for some unpleasant holiday.

The second one is both coasts have cultural differences as well. In Pelabuhan Ratu there is some annual ritual which its people do every year. The ritual is called “Sesembahan” or sacrifice. When it happens, people march among the road dressed in traditional clothes and throw away a lamb head into the ocean as their expression of gratitude to Nyai Roro Kidul (the queen of the South coast) for the fish they catch that year. But in Keusik Urug there are no such things. The Eastern do not do some specific big ritual as the Southern. They do not make fishing as their number one job. In fact we will find it very rare that Eastern People become fisherman. They chose farming over fishing because it is the job which is more saver for them.

The last dissimilarities between both beaches is the public facility which local government built in both areas. In Pelabuhan Ratu, the Government aware of the tourism objects. They build many public facilities to attract tourists and to make them comfortable to spend their holiday. There are so many toilets, hotels and any others facilities near Pelabuhan Ratu coast. The road in Pelabuhan Ratu also in a good condition. But in Keusik Urug, tourist will rarely find public facilities. The only toilet you will find is in the other side of the beach and we have to wait so long in queue to get in even just to change our clothes. There are no hotels in Keusik Urug, at least not the bigger one. Tourist who want to see sunrise or sun down have to sleep in Barak (a shack which made by plastic and it can be very costly). Keusik Urug road is not as good as any other road in Jampang. It's almost has hole in every kilo meter and the road near the beaches still made by shard of corral.

In conclusion of both Jampang beaches, Pelabuhan Ratu lies in the south coast and Keusik Urug in the east coast. That is why they have dissimilarities both in road condition, waves and more importantly, public facilities. When Pelabuhan Ratu have all its kind of completeness, Keusik Urug still needs more attention both in the problem of the road condition or public facilities. In this case the government role is very important to make innovations and making tourism objects more pleasing and comfortable. Despite the dissimilarity, both Pelabuhan Ratu and Keusik Urug beaches offer so much joyful holiday experinces with natural ocean view especially for Sukabumian who cannot enjoy ocean vibes every day in their busy lives.
